Hail Cuts Moroccan Cereal Crop

After a wetter than normal growing year hopes were high of a decent grain crop in Morocco this year, but heavy storms and hail late in the season have cut production forecasts.

The grain harvest this year will fall by more than 20% from 10.2 MMT to around 8 MMT, according to the Moroccan Agriculture Minister.

Soft wheat output will fall 11.6% to 3.8 MMT, from 4.3 MMT in 2009, meaning that the north African nation will need to import around 3.6 MMT of soft wheat in 2010/11, he says.
